  17. <p>     In 1981 Simon & Schuster agreed to pay career criminal Henry
  18. Hill $100,000 for telling author Nicholas Pileggi about life
  19. inside the Mafia. The resulting book, Wiseguy, became a best
  20. seller and the basis for the hit movie GoodFellas. But New York
  21. State's highest court ruled that the payment to Hill violated
  22. the 1977 "Son of Sam" law, so named for the pseudonym of serial
  23. killer David Berkowitz. Designed to keep crooks from cashing in
  24. on their crimes, the measure required that any earnings from
  25. selling their stories be used to compensate their victims. Last
  26. week the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the law, holding that it
  27. violated the First Amendment's freedom of speech provision.
  28. Similar laws in 41 other states could also be overturned.
